Krispy Kreme
Managing the New Zealand operations for one of the world’s most iconic doughnut chains keeps Antonio Rivera on his toes. He's responsible for Krispy Kreme's four existing New Zealand stores, and is set to add another when the fifth store opens later this year. It's not a job for the faint of heart - he's keeping the wheels turning on an operation that employs more than 150 Kiwis.
Krispy Kreme and Nisbets
In an operation the size of Krispy Kreme, every piece of kitchen equipment needs to be fit for purpose with minimal downtime. So five years ago, when planning for the first store got underway, Antonio reached out to Nisbets for help.
Right from the outset, we had an outstanding experience with Nisbets," says Antonio. "The dedication and commitment to our brand was really impressive, and it continues to be at the heart of our close working relationship."
Nisbets supply a wide range of equipment to Krispy Kreme, from the smallest spatulas, cutting boards and trays to milkshake blenders, coffee machine and fridges. And whilst some of the equipment is standardised across stores, the needs can vary depending upon the space each Krispy Kreme operates in.
Being able to identify what's needed and where is a critical part of the Nisbets remit, along with the servicing of any equipment on New Zealand shores.
The Krispy Kreme story began in 1930s USA where legend has it that a young Vernon Rudolph, the man destined to be the King of Krispy Kreme, won the secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe in a poker game with a French chef in New Orleans.
As Krispy Kreme's fame spread, so the number of stores grew. And to ensure that customers would get the same experience no matter where they purchased their doughnuts, an automatic doughnut cutter was developed - a more modern version of which can now be found in Krispy Kreme kitchens around the world.
Those kitchens have become a familiar friend for Mark Twyman, Business Development Manager for Nisbets New Zealand. He's worked with Antonio on the supply and service of equipment since planning for the first store got underway.
"The Krispy Kreme processes are unique," says Mark, "so when I first started working with the brand, it was critical to fully understand their initial requirements, along with the day-to-day operations. With every client, the brief goes beyond equipment - it's about getting to know the business inside out and facilitating their growth in any way you can."
Whilst there's the more project-orientated part of the relationship, such as planning the opening of a new store, the day-to-day requirements demand a supplier who has their finger firmly on the pulse, says Antonio.
"Understanding our goals and being able to suggest ways to remove any pain points is critical, and that's something that Nisbets excel at," says Antonio. "Mark's very flexible and always available to help – it's reassuring to know that he'll take ownership and deliver every time."
For Mark, it's been an exciting journey with an iconic international brand. "I love seeing clients doing well and Krispy Kreme has been case in point," he adds.
"I've been privileged to see how things work behind the scenes, and to be there to support Antonio since day one."
Antonio added: "Krispy Kreme has benefitted from Mark's 30+ years of experience in the industry. He's a problem solver extraordinaire - whether it's sourcing a key piece of equipment quickly or proposing solutions to a problem, we know that he will always go above and beyond."
